Rowley Shears, G8KW, (SK):

eHam.net News - The Society has learned with great sadness that Rowley Shears BEM, G8KW, passed away on Tuesday 17 November 2009. Responsible for re-introducing amateur radio into Germany after the second world war, he was perhaps best known for his KW range of amateur equipment from the 1950s to the 1970s. Through KW Electronics and the KW2000 transceiver, he was largely responsible for popularising SSB in the British amateur community. Rowley passed away peacefully at the ripe old age of 90.

Cuba Facilitates Equipment to Amateur Radio Operators:

eHam.net News - Pedro Rodriguez, president of the Cuban Ham Radio Federation (FRC for its Spanish acronym) told the press that the first 600 units are ready for delivery and using them the operators will be able to ensemble new equipments or update those they already have. He added that the spreading of this operation, which requires the purchase of 15 percent of the components abroad, will depend on the country's economic possibilities, affected by the world economic crisis. During the recently concluded 8th FRC Congress, it was presented a new prototype, with the brand name "Caiguaran", designed by several specialists and manufactured at one of the MIC factories. The term "amateur" reflects the principle that Amateur Radio and its skilled operators are committed to helping communities without financial compensation; whereas Commercial Radio operates for profit.

Adventure in the Arctic: VO2A Expedition to Labrador

ARRL - I have been interested in island chasing ever since I can remember. After moving to Canada, I operated as VE3LYC and contacted 947 IOTA stations from the 1021 on the air. Why chase islands? Some of them are located so remotely, and are so difficult to access, that hams only rarely get there and for only very short periods of time. Under these conditions, it is more challenging to break the pileups and more rewarding to get into the log.

Technology Enthusiast Boosts Skills with Amateur Radio:

eHam.net News - An IT manager in the US spends his spare time brushing up on his technology skills by developing amateur radio communications networks. John D Hays, who hails from Washington, said that amateur radio is important for the emergency services to transfer messages if mainstream methods of communication, such as mobile phones and the internet, go down. "Individuals with radios in the field could interconnect with the telephone system even when their cell phones are shut down by an emergency," he told ComputerWorld. He added that the medium can be used to experiment with megahertz of free bandwidth, which is available to broadcast any signal as long as the sender has an amateur radio licence. The Times-Georgian recently reported that amateur radio enthusiast Earl Todd enhanced his telecommunication skills during the annual simulated emergency test in the US state. The October 4th event lasted for two hours, with the amateur radio fan sending messages about the state of the weather in the area.

Solar Radio Flux: Slow Upward Trend Since Summer:

eHam.net News - A slow but steady increase is seen in the 10.7cm solar flux since late September. This is the longest sustained upward trend in the electromagnetic emissions since early 2008. It is yet another indicator that the sun continues to awaken from its pronounced solar sluggishness. Observe the black line at the top of the graph. There is a gentle, but definite upward slope from left (older data) to right (newest data). This is the 10.7cm flux reading. This further supports solar researchers' viewpoint that solar activity is climbing out of the cycle 23/24 minimum, which was the most pronounced since 1913.

The 2009 ARRL Spectrum Defense Campaign Needs Your Support

ARRL - ARRL Chief Development Officer Mary Hobart, K1MMH reports that the ARRL has raised $126,828 toward the goal $310,000 for the 2009 Spectrum Defense Fund. "The messages I receive from the ARRL members and hams who contribute to this much needed fund are heartening," she said, "expressing appreciation for all the work ARRL does for the Amateur Radio community to protect our frequencies. And we can all be proud of the successes that have come from the work of ARRL leadership -- the Board and staff here at HQ. But there is always more to do." Hobart said that year after year, ARRL members tell her that the League's representation of radio operators -- both in Washington and on the international stage -- is one of, if not the most important activities that the ARRL does. "The cost of that representation at meetings in Washington, at IARU gatherings and working party meetings to prepare for world telecommunications conferences is the key to the continued success of our defense efforts," she said. "Spectrum Defense is one of those areas that is not covered completely by member dues. So we ask ARRL members to do what they can to help cover those expenses." Amateurs wishing to make a contribution may do so easily online, via postal mail or by calling the ARRL Development Office at (860) 594-0397.

Hints & Kinks: PL-259 Connector Tool for Coax Cables:

eHam.net News - Tired of using pliers to screw on the PL-259 connectors when you are preparing cables? Pliers always seem to do some damage by the amount of force this task requires. Now You Know!: It's All Greek to Me:

eHam.net News - Ask any high school physics student and they'll tell you that electrons govern pretty much everything we do. We call electrons in motion an electrical current, and those radio waves that we hams are so fond of are the result of high frequency electrons traveling in our antenna conductors. Think of a 40 meter wave as an accidental tourist who wants to go somewhere (somewhere nice and warm, maybe a rare DX station). But how to get there? It needs some mode of transport -- think of electrons as the transport providers.

Hams Will Keep the News Flowing in a Major Flood:

eHam.net News - One of the most important elements of emergency response to any disaster is the ability to communicate, and a group of hams are a key to keep this area talking. That communication will be essential to coordinating an evacuation and to saving lives if the worst happens and the Green River Valley floods because of a weakened Howard Hanson Dam. During a disaster, phone lines and cell phones often are the first systems to become overloaded and fail. If an emergency hits and communication systems do fail, amateur radio operators, often known as hams, will be providing alternate emergency communication for fire, police city government and schools. The ham radio clubs around the region are part of the Amateur Radio Emergency Service, or ARES. Richard Green, who is a member of the Maple Valley Amateur Radio Club, said there are "ARES groups all over the county." When an emergency occurs, the Emergency Communication Center is activated at King County Sheriff's Precinct 3 in Maple Valley and the ham operators in the ARES group are notified.
